Who can apply :
  • An Australian permanent resident
  • A former Australian permanent resident whose last permanent visa was not cancelled, or
  • A former Australian citizen who lost or renounced citizenship.

    Validity of Resident Return Visa (RRV)
    Subclass 155

    5 years :   You will be issued an RRV for 5 years if you meet the minimum stay requirements in Australia.  You must stay 730 days (2 years) in Australia out of the last 5 years.

    12 months : If you do not stay in Australia for more than 2 years out of the last 5 years, you must show proof of substantial ties to Australia and you can be granted a 12-month RRV.  You can also get a 12 months renewal if one of your family holding on to this visa is living in Australia

    Subclass 157

    3 months : If you do not meet the stay requirements but have compelling and compassionate reasons to leave Australia, you can be granted a 3-month RRV

     A Resident Return visa is granted to Australia permanent resident whose travel facility on their permanent visa has expired.

    If you are already in Australia as a permanent visa holder, you do not need to apply for this visa unless you wish to leave and re-enter Australia as a permanent resident.

    Resident Return Visa is usually issued with a validity of 5 years, 1 year or 3 months.

    Applications that meet the residence requirement are generally processed within 5 working days of lodgment. For subclass 155 visas, application is processed within 9 days up to 90 days.

    You must have ties that are benefit to Australia, example: You have business ownership or active partnership. The business hires Australian; or you own a property in Australia. 

    You can renew your RRV 2 weeks before the expiry.
